How licence upgrades work

Upgrading a truck licence in Queensland takes a road rules test, training and a practical test. Here's the order it happens in.

HR and HC

  1. Hold your licence long enough

At least 1 year in your current class (or 2 years on a car licence to go straight to HR), within the last 5 years.

  2. Pass the TMR road rules test

You book and pay for this with TMR yourself. TMR's online practice test is a good place to start.

  3. Train with your trainer

One-on-one in Gympie, in an automatic or on an 18-speed Road Ranger, until you're ready.

  4. Practical driving test

We book your TMR test and pay the test fee, and you sit it in our truck. It's included in your package.

  5. New licence

Pass, and TMR issues your upgraded licence.

MC (Multi Combination)

  1. Hold HR or HC

You can do the course any time after getting your HR or HC. You don't need HC first.

  2. The MC course

Theory and practical training with us. There's no TMR written test for MC.

  3. Assessment

MC courses are run through RAISE Training (RTO 91655). Pass the theory and practical assessments and they issue your Statement of Attainment for TLIC4006 Drive multi-combination vehicle.

  4. Upgrade at TMR

Once you've held HR or HC for 12 months, take your Statement of Attainment, licence and ID to a TMR Customer Service Centre and pay the upgrade fee.

Good to know

  • The time you've held a licence can be one stretch or several, but must be within the last 5 years, and doesn't count time it was suspended, surrendered, cancelled or expired.
  • If your licence has a medical condition, you'll need a medical certificate for the new class.
  • TMR sets the rules and issues licences. Check TMR's licence upgrade page for your own situation, or ask Tom.
